Aberdare national park is two and a half-hour drive from the city of Nairobi vied Thika Nyeri road or Nairobi Nakuru highway turning at Naivasha fly over. It has several access points namely Shamata gate, Rhino gate, wandare gate( these are Gates in the northern part of the park)’ Ark top, and treetops gates to the northeast. Ruhuruini gate and Kiandogoro accessible from the Eastern side of the park and finally Mutubio West gate and Njabini south west respectively.

Hiking peaks run from the southern part of the park to the north.

Aberdare National park viewpoint, OLe satima in the background. Elephant hill kinangop hill with an elevation of 3680m and  3906 m high respectively can be accessed via Njabini gate a few kilometers from Njabini town. Experienced hikers can summit the two hills in a day though it can be very exhausting especially on a rainy day.




Rumureria peak 3886m
Rumureriai is in the Midwest of the park and can be accessed through Bushy town after Geta forest, a two-kilometer drive to the fence line before heading to the trails, this hike must be arranged prior with the warden in charge so that he can assign a guide/ranger to be picked as instructed. The peak stands at 3886, it quite steep and can take between 2 to 3hrs to the peak.

Ole Fatima trails, the visitor is accompanied by a ranger.
Oldonyo Le satima is the highest point in Aberdare National park standing at 4001m, hikers can check-in through Mutubio, Shamata, Rhino, and Wandare gates. Hiking must be accompanied by a ranger.

Unless you summit Aberdare heights to the top, your view will be obscured. You might choose to acclimatize before the hike, Aberdare National park offers you camping sites, both public and private campsites, Day one of your hiking itinerary could be overnight camping as you set for a full day hike in your day two before you leave the park. Entry time, in this case, should be well calculated to avoid the next day’s overstay which attracts a full fee as per kws policy guidelines Single entry is for a 24hr uninterrupted stay.


Fishing Lodge self Catering Bandas Nestled at the parks central Moorland, they are two units each with 7 pax capacity, you need prior bookings through Kenya wildlife service headquarters or at the park headquarters in Nyeri Mweiga.

Accommodations outside the Park.

Golden gates, the facility is along Nyeri Nyahururu road just 4km to Treetops gates, an ideal place to stay and it’s pocket friendly.

Rhino watches, It’s 5Km  Northwest of Mweiga town and approximately  12km to Ark gate.

Hickman Loft, self-catering accommodation facility which is less than a kilometer to ark gate Aberdare.

Muka Aberdare, less than 20 minutes drive from Mweiga Nyeri.

In the house built along the Aberdare fence line, you are likely to sight Elephants foraging in the Forest among other animals.
